98. Spool Play

In 2011, I finally got around to making a quilt based solely on selvages, Spool Play.

I machine quilted around each spool, and then did big stitch in the border, including a sewing needle.

I was invited to do my first-ever quilt trunk show in Arroyo Grande, California, on the Central Coast, and then to teach a class the next day, my first-ever class. After a short tutorial on how to sew with selvages, everyone made at least one spool block.

They even had me sign a "guest book" that has signatures from past quilt teachers. Look--there I am next to Freddy Moran and Alex Anderson! Quite an honor.

96. Goin' Dotty

In 2010 I signed up for a block of the month from Quiltin' Cousins in Pismo Beach. Each month I would get fabric that contained only fabric with dots.

About the same time, I had started collecting selvages. All kinds of selvages, but specifically those with the name "dot". It all started with a line of fabric by Michael Miller called Dumb Dot, which I thought was the funniest name for a fabric. I was hooked.

Several friends went on a shop hop along the Central Coast and at every stop I looked for any kind of fabric that had dots, and then checked out the selvage. If it contained the word "dot" I bought it. When I I sewed the quilt top together, I pieced all those "dotty" words into the setting stones--each one is different.

The one that started it all!!

95. Selvage Spiderweb mini

Selvage Spiderweb was part of a mini exchange. The administrator gave me the name of Jennifer Jenkinson, someone whose blog I had already been following, so I knew a few details about her--she loved Coca Cola, loved to read, etc. I chose selvages that reflected some of those things and it was a really fun mini to customize.
