196/197. Just Can't Cut It

2018 was the year Ruby and Amelia Brooks got their Just Can't Cut It Christmas quilts. I just never get tired of making this pattern.

164/165. Just Can't Cut It

My grandchildren love having Christmas blankets through the holidays. Years ago I made several out of the same pattern, Just Can't Cut It.  It's a super easy pattern, goes together quickly and is perfect for those larger scale prints that you don't want to chop into tiny pieces.

Charlotte and Levi each already have a Christmas quilt, so this was the year to get Gabe and Ella covered up.

I had started the blocks for Gabe's quilt last year, and then time got away from me. This year I was able to finish his, and in the space of a couple hours one Sunday afternoon, chose the fabric and completed Ella's quilt too.

Gabe's quilt is mostly red and green, but I didn't have enough of any single print for the border, so it was fun to make a scrappy border.
Years ago, I purchased 3 1/2 yards of the cutest Christmas fabric and I have been waiting, and waiting, for the perfect project to use it. Gabe is already quite an artist. He loves drawing, and I knew this was just the right backing as it looks hand drawn.
Ella loves pink, so I gathered all the pink Christmas fabric I could find. Cute nutcracker fabric and gingerbread houses seemed like the perfect choices. I used a couple of non-traditional fabrics in her--the cherries, which included some chocolate covered cherries, and also some hoarded Sandi Henderson Henna Garden in the red and pink colorway. Because all the sweetness needing a little toning down, I chose brown for the inner border, just like a ribbon of chocolate.

I had a hard time finding a good place to photograph them, and the lighting was not ideal, but I was anxious to deliver the quilts.

84. Jennifer's Favorite Things

If there was a quilt pattern that Jennifer Ogawa despised, it was Just Can't Cut It. I could never figure out why. But inexplicably, she did NOT like it at all. So when her 40th birthday rolled around, Susan Harper, Maggie Harper and I decided that of course we would make her a quilt and of course we would use the pattern, Just Can't Cut It. She would HAVE to like it, right? After all, it was made by her good friends.

Her family had planned a surprise brunch, where we had a good time gifting the quilt to her. And she DID love it.

(I think Maggie was out of town and unable to attend the celebration)

75. Blueberry Limeade

Another Just Can't Cut It quilt. I loved the paisley print so much.

I kept this quilt for a long time. I worked for a neurologist, Victoria Walton, and her daughter, Allison Angel, was diagnosed with a rare cancer in her mid 20s. I felt like she needed a "comfort quilt" and gifted this to her.

72. Noche domingo en la Casa Corona

Mike Blomgren, Maggie Harper, Mark and I used to have dinner at Casa Corona nearly every Sunday night. I found a lot of Mexican-themed fabrics and made them a quilt to commemorate all of our fun meals together.

50. Play Ball

This was a baby quilt for Elijah Manginelli, whose parents, Chris and Jen, are very good friends to Aaron and Christa.

Chris is an avid Dodgers fan (just like Aaron) so I had to add the scrap of Dodger fabric just for him.
