145. Pattern Play

About a year before I started making this quilt, I saw this great set of blocks for our grandson called Pattern Play. It comes with forty cards. You choose a card and then use the blocks to duplicate the pattern on the card. If you are like me, the first thing that popped into my head was that it was the perfect idea for a quilt!

A couple months later, there was an opportunity to work with two beautiful fabric lines, Artisan Cottons by Another Point of View and Heavy Metals by Whistler Studios, both for Windham Fabrics.  I knew these were the perfect fabrics for Pattern Play.

Pattern wise, I had nothing to go on except these 4" cards, but it was fairly easy to figure out that the strips should be 1" finished and the blocks would be 10" x 10" finished.

Some blocks were easy.

Even these two were quite simple.

Quite a few had a higher degree of difficulty.

With so much color and pattern going on, I separated the blocks with 1" black sashing strips.

I used this fabric, also by Windham, for the backing. The bonus? It is 108" wide so there was no need for any seams on the back! Which was a good thing, because by then I was completely over trying to figure anything out!

I'm so happy with how the quilt turned out. The fabrics are rich in color, and the two lines, Artisan Cottons and Heavy Metals, play so well together. I think Pattern Play is the perfect name, don't you?

In 2023, we took the quilt out for a fun photography session. We have driven by this mural near Charlotte's high school for over three years. The colors were just right for this quilt.
